Hello, my peeps! What is up? (Yes, I know the sky, the ceiling or the stars)
Yesterday, I went to London Fashion Weekend and it was really awesome, I even met an upcoming designer – Zoë Jordan (she opened London Fashion Week).
Zoë Jordan’s new collection is amazing – just have a look for yourself. (0r look on the website -http://www.zoe-jordan.com/collections/ss13.aspx )
After the show, there was a small interview with Zoë Jordan (in the Vodafone lounge), where she reveals her secret, her nervousness about opening London Fashion Week and her ways to get inspiration.
She said that she had nightmares before opening LFW (London Fashion Week), she dreamed that a seam would come undone or a model would not show up but she was very excited to open LFW – “it was like a dream come true”. LFW is becoming the BEST place for finding and showcasing new talent. She said that to become some-what successful, you need to have some knowledge in business or have a business background, having a business attitude helps you control your company in its early stages and shows you that fashion isn’t just about being creative and different. You are never taught how to create and sustain a fashion label, so don’t become restricted by the label. To make your label successful you need to be brave and ask more experienced people what is needed to make your label/business go to the next step. You also need that organic flow from one season to another season.
Zoë Jordan’s S/S 13 collection (as she herself says) is a relaxed, tomboy, athletic collection. Zoë Jordan says she focusses on making clothes wearable and something that can be worn season after season not just for that particular season – ” If it doesn’t look good or feel good on the body, you don’t put it in the collection”. Jordan also stated that the woman wearing the clothing needs to be a confident, powerful woman – ” I don’t want the clothes wearing the woman, the woman should be wearing the clothes”. In the brand new collection – A/W 13 – Jordan describes the collection to be quite 60s, sharper, tailored, mono chromic, angler and graphic. She revealed some key pieces needed by every women from her A/W 13 collection – fishtail sequin skirt, cashmere and lots of tailoring. It has a tomboyish elegance feel to it because of the colours, fabrics and shapes used.
Zoë Jordan also gave advice for budding designers in the interview:
- Get samples together
- Make a few pieces from you collection
- Start playing or being creative
- Start showing people your collection – on paper or on fabric
- Knock on a few doors, SHOW your work
- Team up with a friend who is handy with a sewing machine or pattern cutter
- Have an interest in fashion
- Learn from other industries to help your own fashion label
- Be resourceful
- Don’t be too whimsical
- Don’t be too terrified about industry
- An internship can help you learn more about industry
- Work hard, people will pick up on your work
Jordan’s final thoughts were on about how to get inspired when having the designer’s version of writers block – go to art galleries, go to the top of a double decker bus and always keep your eye open.
